In brief
Some instructions do not arrive with the name of a statute attached. They arrive as a contract, a notice, or a question about whether you can do the thing you are about to do. This is the practice for that first, careful advice, and for the representation that follows it.
Discuss this matter
Advice

Drafting
Contracts, notices, and petitions read before they are signed or filed.
Appearance

The brief
What clients ask us
Choose a question. The answer sets out the work we actually take in this practice, in plain language.
Answer
It covers the facts you bring, the area of law they sit in, and a view of what you can do next. It is not a promise about the result of a case that has not been read.
- Company, civil, criminal, family, property, and the areas around them
- A plain account of rights and obligations
- Advice aimed at avoiding a dispute, not only at fighting one
What does a consultation actually cover?

Will you draft and review documents?
Answer
Yes. Most of the cases we later see began as a document someone signed without a second reading.
- Contracts and agreements
- Notices
- Petitions and replies
Where will you appear?
Answer
Where the proceeding is actually listed. The chamber's work is not confined to a single court in the city.
- District courts
- High Courts
- The Supreme Court
- Tribunals
Can you look at a deal before it is signed?
Answer
That is often the most useful hour we spend. Due diligence and a compliance question are cheaper than the suit that follows a careless closing.
- Legal due diligence
- Regulatory compliance
- Negotiation between the parties, when both will talk
Do you advise people who need help understanding where they stand?
Answer
Yes. Part of the work is telling a client what the law requires of them, including where they may be entitled to free legal aid and would rather know that than pay for a case they should not bring.
- Rights and duties, explained on the facts
- Representation for those eligible for free legal aid
- Counsel on risk, before a notice is sent
The path
How a matter moves
01
The question
We ask you to state the decision you need to make, not the entire history.
02
The papers
The contract, the notice, or the order is read against that question.
03
The advice
You get a view of the options, including the option of doing nothing.
04
The next instruction
If the matter has to be filed, drafted, or negotiated, that is a separate step you can choose.
Before you instruct us
Questions on this practice
I do not know which practice my problem belongs to. Can I still write?
Yes. Say what happened and send the latest paper. We will tell you which practice it is, or that it sits across two of them.
Is a consultation the same as being on record in the case?
No. Advice comes first. Filing, a vakalatnama, and appearance are a further instruction.
Can you review a draft the other side has sent?
Yes. Marking up their draft is often more useful than writing a new one.
Do you appear outside Kolkata on a general brief?
Yes, in the High Courts and the Supreme Court, and in tribunals where the matter is listed. The logistics are settled before the hearing, not the evening prior.
What if I cannot afford a full case?
If you are eligible for free legal aid, we will tell you, and we can represent you on that footing. Eligibility is a legal test, not a favour.
These answers describe the practice. They are not advice on the facts of your matter.
